HEADCANON SHIT
• b. 10 March 1917. • father: george. • mother: winifred. • siblings: william, michael, rebecca. • cat: alpine.
EARLY LIFE.
• nicknamed "bucky" because there were too many james' in the neighbourhood and school. • rebecca's the only one who consistently called him james. • worked from an early age to provide for his family + steve. • never been in love; had a few serious girlfriends leading up to the war. • father died when he was young, so he looked after his siblings + steve. • close to rebecca; he was overprotective of her.
MILITARY LIFE.
• drafted into the war. • he was worried about his family and steve.
THE WINTER SOLDIER.
• they took his dog tags 8( meanies. • howard stark wasn't the only childhood friend that he killed. he also killed colonel chester phillips and he also killed fellow howling commandos james merit and jacques denier. • every time he began to remember himself, they wiped him. • strongest winter soldier bc i said so and lbr the serum given to the other winter soldiers would've been modified from his original mixture bc hubris. • gave him spy missions, too. • thanks to hydra, bucky has severe ptsd that's compounded with his war/p.o.w. trauma, dislike of physical assault, verbal assault, brainwashing, mind control, and feeling out of touch and not in control of himself.
RED ROOM.
This is for any Red Room storylines. I'll fill this in with better details once I have read Brubaker's run. Generally follows the comics storyline, but adapted to MCU. Happy to change to Yelena bc I'm a filthy trash shipper.
• doesn't know his name or identity—he's just soldat. • the only winter soldier training in the program bc the others were put to sleep—not as formidable or quick to adapt as bucky (and bc i said so). hydra temporarily allied itself with red room head honchos bc it was better to ally with a potential enemy than to be an enemy. • trained the widows, including natasha and yelena. • natasha was the only person to ever look at him and not be afraid, which is why he initially felt drawn to her. she looked at him like he was a person. • being with natasha made him feel human—he started to feel confident in even voicing his own opinions, something that hydra never encouraged and often punished him for (so he learned how to be silent). • always went a little harder in his training with natasha bc he believed she had a chance in getting out and he didn't want her to be perceived as soft amongst the head honchos. • snuck into her room all the time to lie down beside her. only time his head didn't feel like it was a heavy spinning weight. (comic book.) • first time bucky was able to interact with people who weren't directly under the thumbs of hydra. it began to break his programming a little. • hydra mind-wiped bucky from remembering the red room, specifically natasha, bc he disobeyed his orders by falling in love with her (they see it as a defect in their programming). (also why would they let him remember when they never let him remember anything or cut his own hair lmf.)
REGAINING HIS LIFE.
• cut his hair bc the long hair was never his choice—that was hydra.
REBECCA BARNES. • his sister's 10 years younger than him. • he was extremely overprotective of her. • rebecca's now extremely overprotective of him. • taught her how to punch. • rebecca when she was an adult. • he visits rebecca all the time and dances with the ladies at the aged care facility. some of them are women he knew from the 1930s/40s. • rebecca constantly calls him out for his bullshit. tries to encourage him to live his life and is often the devil on his shoulder. • rebecca named her son after him. • very hesitant to talk to her about his past, but he does so bc she never changes her perspective of him. • tries to set him up on dates just so she can live vicariously through him.
• william and michael are dead by the time bucky comes back to being himself.
• kind of is that estranged uncle to his nieces and nephews and their families. struggles to be around them due to how much pressure he puts on himself to be normal and likeable.
• gives old man steve his space, even though he checks up on him every now and then. • when steve dies, he visits his grave a lot. always wears newspaper in his shoes when he visits.
• has an expensive apartment in new york (bc why not? he could never afford such affluence before) that isn't furnished save for a rug in the living room, tables in the living room and bedroom, kitchen counter, and television on a television stand. • feels the most comfortable in louisiana bc the people are super nice and inviting—they see him, not his arm nor his part.
• afraid of hurting his partner, hence why he sleeps on the floor and doesn't go on dates. • doesn't want kids (but would be the best dad superhero dad). • doesn't want to get married but will get married if his partner wants to. • just wants a golden retriever. • alpine the cat. that's it. that's the dot point.
• he likes the people he cares about calling him "james". it's like they see him.
ALPINE.
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF HIS LIFE! inspired by my cats bc why not.
• as a tiny little kitten, she followed bucky home one day and decided to never leave her new cushy life. • a white ragdoll. • she flops when she wants to manipulate people. • wants to play all hours of the day. • steals bucky's spot on the floor. • sleeps by bucky's head or on top of him. • she likes to lick bucky's metal arm. • she's very set in her ways and can be seen as unfriendly, but she's friendly to people she likes. • owns bucky's leather jacket. • likes to be carried inside of his jacket. she is the QUEEN.
OOC Note. Obviously, anything pertaining to other characters is something I'm flexible in changing to make it work with my thread partner and the storyline. I put together this page for myself; this is generally how I look at playing Bucky. |
